What a great adventure.
If you’re not sure, don’t worry, Jay has it all figured out. From where to camp, potential hikes and snorkeling spots to all the basics utensils/stuff (even towels) you may need, noting you supply your own food.
The car is smooth. I did the road to Hana, which I have done before but found Jay’s vehicle to handle it much better. Also you get the added benefit of feeling like a local.
I didn’t really have questions but just checked with an “Aloha” to Jay daily letting him know all was well. He often gave me an additional tip or idea based on my location.
It is so nice to have the freedom to stay almost anywhere on the island. Camping is accepted and encouraged with all the parks and off road public spots.
The great news if you can go anywhere for cheaper than most rental cars and you have a place to stay. And you also have the option to stay in a hotel one night if you feel like it.
If you like taking photos, you will love this.

Wholesome Experience!
We were on the road with a campervan of Jay for nearly a week and it was an absolutely wholesome experience! Booking was super easy and the communication just awesome from the very beginning. When we picked up the car with a lot of open questions - Jay really introduced us to Maui in such a cool way. He gave us advice to literally everything regarding camping, sightseeing, life on Hawaii. Ce 4x4 est parfaitement équipé et préparé pour un périple sur tous les terrains. Le matelas est confortable et l'équipement de cuisine est juste ce qu'il faut pour cuisiner tranquillement pendant les campings. Nous avons vraiment apprécié ces moments. De plus, Jay nous a fourni tous les bons spots pour camper et profiter au mieux (spots de snorkeling, plages cachées, spots à tortues, etc.). This is my second time staying with Jay and I hope to many more times! He goes above and beyond to make sure your time on Maui is well spent and really gives personalized suggestions on places to visit based on the type of traveler you are as well as the specific weather conditions during the time you're there. He checks in on his guests throughout the stay to make sure they see the best beaches, campsites, and other sites. His recommendations on campsites are great and he knows of so many places I would have never discovered using Google Maps or even by just driving around.
Since he car camps himself he knows exactly what is needed to do it comfortably and provides all of those amenities or tells you the easiest way to find them.
This was my second time car camping and my girlfriend's first time, and we both agree that we would want to visit again and stay with Jay.

I thought it may have been too good to be true but all the positive reviews are legit, we can’t recommend him more. Check in was super easy and he was very thorough in making sure we knew all the necessary info/had everything we needed. The car it’s self was great, spotlessly clean and surprisingly comfortable to sleep in. He has well and truly thought of everything you could possibly need and created the perfect camping set up. The information pack he provides is invaluable and you can basically just arrive and follow what it says in there - no prior planning necessary. Free, legal and SAFE campsites were provided along with a 10 or so page guide on how to get to the secret spots that bloggers don’t know about and tour companies won’t tell you about!
Also he provides you the best snorkeling spots with complementary awesome snorkel gear to use!

My boyfriend and I stayed in Jay’s camper for 3 nights and had a great time! Jay is a super kind, helpful host and was responsive to anything we needed. At check in, he gave us a booklet full of camping info and went over details about the car and equipment provided. Camper had everything we needed and more.
Camping on Maui was definitely much more difficult than anticipated. The first night, we stayed near Makena beach which was a nice spot right by the ocean and was easy enough to find.
Second night, we attempted to park along the highway which was quite stressful finding a spot and not ideal being close to traffic. We opted to go to Camp Olowalu which cost $67/night for the car camping. These were fully booked but we got lucky due to cancellations but I recommend booking in advance. Liked it there so much we stayed for the third night.
Again, not a reflection of Jay who was awesome!! But thought it might be helpful to know.

Jay is one of the best Hosts I’ve ever had on Airbnb! When we checked in he showed us the whole camper and gave us a list with campgrounds and secret spots, so we always knew what to do and where to stay the night. As the announcement said it is 100% furnished with tiny super useful details (special mention on small light on the top, mosquitoes protection and the brush lol). We stayed four nights in Jay’s camper and it was a great experience. The easiest and fastest way to explore Maui is with Jay’s camper. You have both the car and the bed together and you can move them on the island everywhere! Maui is so safe and easy to camp in. We stayed after 10 days of the Maui’s wildfire and I can assure you that one of the best decision of our whole month vacation was the fact that we didn’t cancel our Maui vacation. This is thanks to Jay because from the beginning he gave us very clear updates on the wildfire situation. I can confirm that the island was perfect only a little part of it burned down which you can easily avoid as we did. His kind and chilled style combined with his joy to share his knowledge about Hawaii is probably the best for everybody from experienced bagpacker to beginners. Im weiteren sind vorhanden Campingstühle, ein wirklich grosser, stabiler Tisch, Poolnudeln und eine richtig gute Schnorchelausrüstung. Ausserordentlich ist das Angebot an Toilettenartikeln!! Jay bietet ein ganzes Sortiment an :) Sonnencreme, Insektenschutzmittel, sogar Ladyshaver und vieles mehr. Also keine Sorge, wenn man etwas vergessen hat. Auch keine Sorge, wenn irgendeine Frage auftaucht.. Jay meldet sich bei Kontaktaufnahme schnell zurück um zu helfen.

He took an hour of his time to give us tips on what to do on the island, where to sleep (his suggestion for camping in Hana was especially helpful) , he saved us some money.. and told us some awesome local stories!!
The car was great, we were greeted everywhere on the roads by locals because they thought we were one of them in this car haha so much fun!! Jay provided every single thing we needed for camping and made our adventure so easy. A fantastic option for folks looking for a bit of adventure and don’t mind roughing it. Perfect way to do Road to Hana and camp at Kipahulu campground at the end. My Type-A tendencies had me a little nervous before arriving because I wasn’t sure of all the details on where we could plan to park overnight on the nights we didn’t have the campground reservation, but when Jay says “Gotcha covered” - he means it. Staying in the car as we explored Maui was an AMAZING experience. Jay gave great recommendations about where to stay, where to snorkel, places to visit, and more. He was very responsive and fun. Overall, having the flexibility to go wherever we wanted on the island allowed us to see 10x more than we would've otherwise.
The Ford Explorer we got had everything we needed to camp out on our vacation - a bed for 2, table, chairs, snorkel gear, camp stove, kitchen supplies, and more. Note that the car is older, not all fancy like a rental car, and some of the things didn't work super well (car usb charger, flashlights, etc.) because all the gear has been used plenty before. This is something to note on your trip, but none of it was really a big deal. For the price and flexibility it gave us, Jay's place was the perfect way to spend the week and 100% worth it!!!! As long as you are prepared to rough it a little and have appropriate expectations, Jay's campers will be awesome and unique 😀.

Jay was an incredible host! I booked a spontaneous, solo trip to Maui and camped for 5 nights. I had no plans before I got to Maui but the instructions/guide that Jay provided were so helpful. Here is how my trip transpired:
Night 1 camped at campsite 1 (from his packet) - loved the sunrise here
Night 2 campsite 3 - loved the sunset views here but the cars driving by were noisy at night
Night 3 - Hana. I didn’t get a chance to book the campsite there but I used a local recommendation from Jay and LOVED that spot. That was the only campsite I paid for. Gorgeous sunrise views. (Side note, do all of his recs for Hana! You gotta pre book black sand beach but I was able to get a time slot 2 days prior to showing up)
Night 4&5 - campsite 6 - stunning sunset views and I saw some whales breaching from here!

This trip was amazing! I was able to travel all over Maui for 9 days by myself. This camper kept me safe and comfortable the whole time! Driving a local car helped me feel secure when parking and camping around the whole island. This thing handled the Road to Hana so well! It was my favorite drive ever! The camper comes with beach items, such as chairs and snorkels, so no worries renting or buying some for this stay. The memory foam matress was comfortable to sleep on, and Jay provided a bug net, so you can keep the bugs out and the back open at night.
There was plenty of room for my luggage and camping supplies, I traveled solo, but there is totally enough room for two. I loved the adventures this vehicle took me on, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Jay put together a great travel packet that led me to the best camping spots. Never fear of finding a place to rest for the night with all the info you need to get to the most incredible spots! Mahalo, Jay for everything!

Wow! We loved the adventures we got to experience in Maui. And we were able to do that only due to Jay. We loved the campervan which has everything you will need. There are two chairs, a table as well as a full kitchen. It is allowed to wild camp in Maui so just drive up to the water and sleep with open doors. It is by far the best way to experience Maui. Y'all, I don't usually right detailed reviews but there really is no better way to explore the island than booking a camper van from Jay.
You may think you're only renting a camper van, but what you're really getting is much more than that. Jay has so much knowledge about the island, the cool spots to camp and explore, local tips that will make enjoying those places a lot more memorable (like when to go, what to watch for, etc.), and a lot more. He's also always a text message away and can guide you through anything you may be going through (I needed to find the closest store to get a new propane gas tank but didn't have internet, I texted him with my location and he told me exactly where to go). He gives you a detailed booklet about places to explore that is so detailed you don't need to plan anything else.
Add to that also that he's friendly, was able to accommodate an early check-in, and dropped us off at a nearby Cafe after checkout to enjoy our last brunch before leaving the island. My girlfriend and I had a blast, we will be coming back and we will never consider booking a resort again -- this is THE WAY to enjoy Maui.

This is the ideal way to explore Maui for an adventurous couple! My wife and I had read up on the usual to-do lists and had looked into the local resorts, but didn’t want to shell out a full paycheck for an expensive room, a rental car, and an artificial experience crammed in with some rushed tour group.
When we saw Jay’s listing, we thought it was too good to be true. He is an experienced and knowledgeable local guide who knows the perfect spots to camp out at and explore. Due to my own poor planning, I almost had to cancel but Jay was very flexible and helped us out with a whole info packet and discussion on what we should do based on our interests and time we had available. The vehicle itself is far more comfortable than we imagined, handles Maui well, and is complete with equipment for camping, snorkeling, cooking, and more.
Even if I had the funds to pay for some upscale resort package, I wouldn’t do it if we were able to plan an adventure with Jay. Whether you want to lounge at the beach, hike through the forest, swim next to waterfalls or just stargaze, Jay has thought of everything you need to have an unforgettable experience. He will make sure that you can find a place to camp overnight whether at campground or local spots. Some areas of the island offer little to no radio signal, so I would suggest bringing a portable speaker with to listen to your favorite tunes (download songs beforehand). Or to use while you're beachfront watching the sunset from bed :-)

We had an absolute blast on Maui with the Camper we rented from Jay. When we arrived at his place the car was all ready to go and he handed us an exclusive island guide with his personal favourite camping spots and things to explore on Maui. So when you book this camper - you actually book a Maui guide with it!
He helped us figure out our plans for our 4 nightlong stay and even checked in with us during the trip with more spots to explore. We didn’t really have more questions because his explanations and the guide were so detailed, but felt like we could always check in with him in case we needed anything else.
The car was great and was equipped with everything we needed for camping! We could tell that Jay has figured out the camper set up over the years of camping to perfection! The memory foam mattress is very comfortable too. The only little thing that we missed in the car was an opportunity to connect our phones to the radio to listen to music. So bring a Bluetooth speaker with you, so you can enjoy your Maui roadtrip while listening to your favourite jams!
We couldn’t recommend booking a trip with Jay more. This is really the way to travel and to explore Maui! Nothing like waking up to the sound of breaking waves and having breakfast with your feet in the sand!

Jay is an enthusiastic host and really cares about the experience you have during your travels and will do the most he can to help you get the most out of your trip. I would say if your thinking about booking else where because maybe the camper “ looks nicer”. the value here is the knowledge.
Left the island with a lot of good memories , we wouldn’t of been able to see this much with out a camper .

It is very safe and Jay gives you all the sleeping locations so we felt very comfortable!! He also gives a packet with everything you need to know about the island and even has secret spots to explore. Jay made our Maui vacation magical and possible! Maui is beautiful but it’s super expensive (not surprisingly or irrationally- it’s an island in the middle of the ocean!). This rental is perfect for those of us who like being off the path and want to enjoy exploring this incredible island. This was a great way to see Maui on a budget! For about a quarter of the cost of hotel + rental car per night you get both. The car ran well and got us everywhere we needed to go. I surprised my husband with a trip to Maui for Xmas and we went over New Years - but we didn’t want to spend a ton! I’d been to Maui twice before but never did the road to Hana so that was our main goal. Jay is such a great host - he made sure we knew where all the camping spots and secret waterfalls were! He helped us get everything we needed and went above and beyond. Definitely do this is you like to camp. Don’t forget to use the mosquito netting over the trunk of the car at night to get good climate control and nice bug free sleep! With the towels, chairs, snorkeling gears, and camping supplies we had everything we needed - best camping spot was by honolua bay. We loved everything about this trip!!

We didn’t have to plan or prepare anything besides bring our clothes because Jay had a wonderful itinerary planned for our 4 night stay with tips about where to park, what to see/do, where the facilities were located, and his favorite things on the island. The SUV was decked with all of the supplies we needed to camp and my 6’5” partner was comfortable enough on the mattress topper. Sensational experience! We camped our way through Maui in Jay’s Ford Explorer. The SUV was decked out with everything needed for comfortable camping. The memory foam mattress was comfy and was just long enough for myself and my 6’ partner. Jay provides a detailed description of the best spots in Maui to camp as well as information on what to see during your stay. He can also provide more info by area if you ask! He was very helpful in getting us to the best spots on the island and it’s clear he wants all his guests to have the most amazing Maui trip possible. We had a little bit of trouble understanding Jay’s texts prior to arrival, but quickly realized this is the aloha spirit and not to worry and plan so much ahead of time. The car ran perfectly, it’s a little rough on the edges but we fit in like the locals. We were able to travel everywhere we wanted on the island and woke up on sandy beaches. Magical. (Careful driving on the sand though).
The camper included 3 pillows, memory foam mattress, bed linens, sarong/curtain covers for the windows for more privacy, a sleeping bag should you need it. Also included: two decent flashlights, an electric lightbulb you can hang in the back, two beach towels, two regular towels, two hand towels, two complete snorkel sets, two beach chairs, 1 pot, 1 pan, 1 knife, 1 cutting board, utensils, paper plates/bowls, basic cooking essentials (s/p, oil), kitchen cleaning supplies, propane, and a Coleman 2 burner stove.

Jay had put together a complete “campers guide to Maui” packet for us. Mapping out specific fun, scenic, and safe spots to camp, hang out, and explore. As well as the best spots to eat, snorkel, sights to see, and tons more. He broke down the road to Hana, giving us really good insight as to what to look for, places to stop, roads to take, and what waterfalls to swim in. Throughout the whole trip Jay was exceptionally accommodating and was always just a text message away if we needed anything. It was awesome!

Our booking had a bit of a snag in plans, because the jeep was getting new brakes before my booking and the repairs took longer than expected. But Jay was totally on it, communicated with me and we worked out an agreement to make my experience totally perfect. He put me up in a hotel room on the beach for the first night and then set me up in another camper vehicle the next day to start the journey.

There is no better way to see Maui than to car camp with one of Jay’s vehicles. Waking up on the beach and seeing the stars, then the sunrise, then the whales (in whale season) and turtles playing in the waves; it was magical. But perhaps my favorite part was that we didn’t need to plan anything! Jay’s local tips allowed us to go where we wanted, when we wanted, and we were able to have a fully spontaneous vacation. That being said, two things we will book ahead upon returning are the old Lahaina luau and camp Olowalu as both were reserved weeks ahead of time. I was pleasantly surprised to see this van on Airbnb, and it was everything I'd hoped it would be! Jay and Sue are very helpful hosts, and have taken great care to stock the van with all the supplies a camper would need in Maui. They were also available to answer questions and provide advice throughout my stay on the island. I chose to wing it once I got there rather than plan too much in advance, and Jay's helpful tips kept me on the right path.
Car camping on Maui does require some flexibility and willingness to wing it a bit. The campground where I was hoping to stay on my first night was full, so I had to put together a backup plan on the fly. It worked out fine, but some travelers might feel a little anxious about this mode of travel--unless you make your reservations in advance, which I chose not to.
Opal is a great van. The bed is a fairly thin foam mattress, and it's a bit bumpy underneath, but I improvised with the pillows to make it more comfortable.

Opal was everything I could ever want for my Maui vacation. I arrived to Maui blind and Jay and Sue were more than helpful to getting me acquainted with the island. Don’t let the fear of no AC turn you off...it really wasn’t that bad. If you get too hot just find a spot to jump in the ocean or a river for a bit. :) The camper comes ready with anything you could need and then some, and communication with Jay and Sue was quick and thorough. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience, and Opal helped make it that way. :)

We wanted to have different pick up and drop off places and they kindly offered to pick us up with some extra fee, so comfortable. especially our flight was early morning so they took the effort to wake up 5am to drop us off to the Kapalua airport that is 1h away from their place. We travelled with Ruby and the best was that we blended in so well with locals. Sue has lots of well throught through tips anf the women touch is so lovely. We recommend them to people who like moving adventure and camping. Best way to get around island and enjoy "free sytle" living. Thank you :)

Jay and Sue were amazingly kind and helpful. They went above and beyond to make sure we knew the ins and outs of where to stay and the lay out of the island. I lived on the big Island of Hawaii, and have been to maui a couple times before but Jays tips were still helpful.
We picked up a free map that had a little more detail and that definitely helped us on the Hana road. We decided to stay down at the end at the park camping and start our day with the hike to the bamboo forest, real cool.
I've rented camper vans before and they didn't even come close to being this comfortable. I would absolutely stay in Ruby again, i hope Jay and Sue are still doing this when i come back again.

Wow! Jay and Sue are really a special couple! My flight arrived much earlier than check in time and they were more than happy to pick me up from the airport anyway. They gave me tons of local tips and tricks and they were really fun to be around! Before I even got the keys to Ruby, I lost my debit card! With none of the mainland bank chains available, they went out of their way to help me get access to my money. It was incredibly sweet and I was fortunate to have had their help and great hospitality. And the Ruby camper- we had a blast! I drove around most of the island and camped out on the beach every night of my stay. It had all of the amenities and camping essentials that one could need and more! Jay and his wife were absolutely the best host you can get. They picked us up at the airport and told us a lot about Maui. When we got to the car they showed us everything and gave us a map of recommendations, where to stay overnight, showers and places to go. The communication couldn’t have been better. They were really fast at responding our text before our trip but also while we where there. We asked them a few times, about where to stay or places to see/go while we were on the island and they responded within a few minutes with a lot of different options. We will definitely recommend their cars. It’s really the best way to come around and see the island.

Jay and Sue are wonderful! They were very easy to get a hold of, Jay always responded within 15 minutes whenever I had a question or concern. The car is equipped with literally everything you can think of; from toilet paper to a tent, they have thought of it all! The only thing we had to bring was stuff to shower with (soap and shampoo/conditioner, even bath towels were included). It’s such a great way to get around Maui. You just pick up where you left off and I couldn't imagine doing Road to Hana any other way. Jay and Sure are the sweetest. Jay and Sue were fantastic! They thought out all of the details for us so we were able to start up Ruby and hit the road to Hana.
They gave us a tip sheet of places to camp and sights to see. Ruby was equipped with everything we needed. They even gave us chocolates!
We hit a snag with our initial camping plans at Black Sand Beach state park reservation since we didn't have a tent. I reached out to Jay and he quickly offered to drive me up a tent! We ended up camping down the road near Pools of O'heo instead but Jay reimbursed me for our initial camping reservation which was very kind of him. Overall, Ruby was well equipped and the hosts were wonderful. I would highly recommend Ruby for your camping adventure. Mahalo!

This AIrBnB exceeded expectations. Great way to see Maui. The fit out of the Ford explorer for use as a camper van has been well thought out. Lots of lovely touches like providing a hammock and snorkel kits. It had cooking facilities and all the pots and dishes you would need. Sun cream was even provided. The truck is a bit older and blends in with the locals very well so we were never worried about robbery and were often treated as locals rather than tourists. We liked that. It was really nice to have the car and just park it at the beach or camping for the sunset and sunrise. The camper is a great, fun and cheap way to explore the island. The car was perfect for getting around towns as well as going and exploring fun areas ie Road to Hana!
