How It All Started
Long before Easy Campers Maui was even a thought, I was having a blast for years camping all around Maui myself.
It all started with my SUV, a mattress in the back, and exploring this magical island being part of it, not just stopping by it. Still go camping all the time and even places I've been to hundreds of times surprise me with something new, beautiful, and completely unexpected every time. Amazing!
The funny thing is, Easy Campers Maui kind of came about by accident. The Easy Camper itself was years in the making. Every time I went camping found something to tweak that would make the setup more comfortable, more useful, or flow a little better. I'd get home, change it up, keep improving it over time, and eventually the whole setup became totally dialed in.
A friend kept jokingly giving me a hard time about my camper sitting unused at home and costing mone when I wasn't out exploring. He kept telling me I should rent it out. I kept telling him nobody comes to Maui on vacation to go camper camping. They want resorts, sitting by the pool, and drinking Mai Tais with a little umbrella in it. 😅
For months he wouldn't let it go. Finally, to prove him wrong, I listed my camper online fully expecting nobody would be interested. Boy, was I wrong!! A few days later it was nearly booked solid for the next couple of months. My personal camper quickly turned into my first guest camper.
Back then guests found me on Craigslist and Airbnb, but the major growth happened after they went home talking and sharing pictures of their Maui camper vacation telling friends, family, coworkers, and pretty much anyone who would listen how much fun they had. 🌴
Before long, people were contacting me wanting a camper for their own Maui vacation. Many told me they had always dreamed of Maui but thought they could never afford it and then they found me. I would have never thought that good old-fashioned word of mouth turned what started as one camper I built for myself into what Easy Campers Maui is today.
I was just known around as Paradise Jay for my love of Maui and the campers were just called my campers. Lol. Then overnight it was almost mandatory to have a website. Which needed a name. So what did I do… Ask guests!
And ya know what the overall answer was “You’re campers make everything so easy you should call them something to do with that”. And Boom!!! Easy Campers Maui was born! Pretty cool huh.? 😁
Then not too long into it I realized guests wanted more than just a camper, even one that was completely set up with everything included. They wanted to know where to go, what to see, where to camp, and how to experience Maui beyond the typical tourist stops.
What started as a few pages of handwritten notes and tips from my first hand knowledge exploring that I handed out at check-in, eventually became the 40+ page self-guided island tour and information binder included with every Easy Camper today. I love sharing my first hand knowledge exploring the island so visitors can feel the same magic I do everytime. 👍
10+ years, 1000s of guests, and to this day I still get a kick out of personally meeting every single guest at check-in, go through their camper and guide with some fun island stories you only know living here, and then help throughout their trip 24/7. That part never feels like work and guests say I'm like a personal on-island camping help desk. Lol. With the island being such an incredible place and knowing how it works I also customize info based on the season, weather, trip length, and what each guest hopes to experience while they're here. Sharing is caring. 😉
One of my favorite parts of doing this is checkout day. Guests come back talking about the memories they made, the places they discovered, and the adventures they never expected to have. They often tell me they wish they had just a few more days to keep exploring paradise this way, not wanting their trip to end at all, occasionally even with a tear in their eye because they know it's time to leave.
And what a great compliment when guests come back over and over and new guests find me only by hearing about it from someone they know who already had Easy Camper fun.
That's what Easy Campers Maui has always been to me. Not just renting you a camper, but helping everyone experience Maui the same way I've loved doing it for years. This is a one of a kind place and there is info you only get by a local passing it along. That’s me! 👏
